My laundry staples- a peek into my laundry cupboard
As a wog my mum engrained in me the ideology of “cleanliness is next to Godliness”. While I am not OCD about cleanliness and orderliness, I do love an uncluttered home, my whites to be white, my clothing to be stain-free and to take pride in what I’m wearing.
I saw my mum’s health completely undermined by the constant use of toxic laundry liquids, fabric softeners and bleach – containing phthalates, artificial fragrance, ammonia, foaming agents and triclosan… to name a few.
She didn’t know that they contained dangerous hormone disruptors, carcinogens, allergens (hello migraine headaches), microbiome disruptors and neurotoxins (brain and nervous system disorders). (note - Bleach and fabric softeners are amongst some of the most toxic products you can be exposed to…and it’s the regular exposure that compounds toxicity).
By the time I knew, it was too late for her. All these chemicals all went into the deadly mix that contributes to chronic illness and degenerative disease. She sadly passed of Dementia several years ago and I vowed I would treat myself more kindly because I have the resources, tools and knowledge that she didn’t.
Once you know, you can’t unknow.
And then the low tox journey begins.'
Going low-tox means swapping out toxic conventional products with more natural versions, one product at a time.
The bliss in switching to Young Living products is that they tick aaaaaalll the boxes:
They are powerful (they really work)
They are cost effective (being ultra concentrated you can use the teeniest amount)
They are safe for PPP (people, planet and pets). Completely non toxic.
You can buy them all online from just one place (phew!) and have them delivered straight to your door (no more racing around like a headless chook to a million different shops, places, websites).
Some people go low tox one room of the home at a time. Others just swap out whatever product that they happen to be running low in… and over the course of approximately 3 years Viola! Your whole house is low tox and you feel 100000% better. Most, if not all, of your and your family’s health issues miraculously disappear.
I started my journey with food and then moved to personal care products and cleaning products and my medicine cabinet. These are the 4 things that we bring into our home that we control. As the gatekeeper of our homes, we hold ENORMOUS power over the health of our family. Collectively this means that we hold enormous power over the health of the planet. I am here to remind you of that power that you hold and to implore you to use that power wisely, for the good of you, your family and the greater good.
So this brings me to my laundry. The laundry is where us mums hang out A LOT. Typically small spaces where the vapours of whatever you’re using intensify. Another reason to go low tox in that room!
Here are my laundry staples:
YL Thieves laundry liquid
Use a ¼ cap for front loaders (yes, that’s a small amount!!!). It’s extremely thick (like molasses) so it is very difficult to get ¼ of the cap out of the actually cap and into the machine…so here is my hot tip- fill the cap to a ½ full then tip it into the machine dispenser then when you tip the cap back you’ll see that there’s still ¼ in the cap… which means than ¼ is in the machine. Viola!
YL Lemon oil for whites
Add a few drops of YL lemon oil on top of the laundry liquid in the dispenser to whiten whites, as lemon oil is a natural cleaner and whitener.
YL Purification oil for darks, coloured,
sports clothes
Add a few drops of YL purification oil on top of the laundry liquid in the dispenser to purify the smell of ponky clothes
Cornwell’s vinegar with lavender oils as a fabric softener
One of the few things that I still buy from the supermarket is Cornwell’s vinegar which naturally softens clothes with a few drops of lavender oil added to it – add both straight into the fabric softener compartment of your washing machine. Your clothes come out smelling amazing! Substitute any other YL oil instead of lavender if you prefer.
Bleach soaking solution
My natural bleach DIY recipe is found in the password protected Member Resources page of my website. It consists of 4 simple natural ingredients:
Hydrogen peroxide (Read more about hydrogen peroxide in this ebook.)
Bicarb of soda
YL Thieves household cleaning concentrate
YL lemon essential oil
Add clothes to a bucket, add the above ingredients to the clothes and then fill bucket with hot/boiling water. Allow to soak for several days then through into the wash.
See DIY recipe in the Member resources page for the exact proportions and links to where to buy quality hydrogen peroxide and bulk cheap bicarb.
YL Thieves Dish Soap as a stain remover
on
clothes – apply neat directly on stains
Before you pop the clothes into the washing machine or soaking bucket. It is powerful at getting rid of oil and grease from crockery so works a treat on clothes. Others also use the Thieves bar soap as a stain remover on clothes by wetting the bar soap and rubbing on stains.
Here is a personal testimonial from someone in our community about the Thieves laundry liquid:
Small changes, big impact.
