Once you know you can’t ‘unknow’….

 

Hi friend,

I grew up using conventional personal care products and cleaning products. That’s all mum knew, and that’s all I knew. We trusted the products we were using. We assumed that they were safe. You don’t know what you don’t know, right? 

But in my mid 20s I started my healing journey (after hitting rock bottom and ending up in a hospital bed) and started to learn about the hidden dangers in the everyday products that line our supermarket and pharmacy shelves – from food to tap water to beauty products to cleaning products. The pivotal light bulb moment for me came when I stood in front of a supermarket shelf and realised this:  

 

Just because something is allowed to be sold doesn’t make it safe.

And that changed EVERYTHING.

It obliterated my naïve trusting of conventional products, however ‘successful’ their marketing campaigns.

It made me sceptical of greenwashed products, however clever their ‘clean’ marketing.

It changed the brands that I invested in.

It made me realise that the brands and products that I buy is a strong vote for the kind of world I want to see.

So here is what I learnt about conventional products made by big biz that made me run a mile from them: The ingredients - regardless of their names (whether its artificial fragrance, propylene glycol, PEGS, aluminium, triclosan, DEET, oxybenzone etc etc) -   have 5 main effects on the human body: 

1. They are carcinogenic (cause cancer)

2. They are endocrine disrupters (mess up our hormones)

3. They are allergenic (hello coughing, wheezing, sneezing, headaches)

4. They are neurotoxic (affecting the brain and nervous tissues); and /or

5. They are microbiome disrupters (obliterating our beneficial bacteria which is the bedrock of our immunity, digestion, brain health, skin health and metabolism). 

Aka chemical shit storm culminating in a myriad of symptoms that if left untreated can ultimately develop into chronic illness and degenerative disease. What we call lifestyle diseases of the modern world because our ancestors of yesteryear never suffered this same fate. And we are told that “it’s just bad luck”. Spoiler alert – NOTHING occurs because of bad luck.
